At least 7 cars broken into overnight in Near West Side neighborhood
CHICAGO (CBS)-- Residents in the Near South Side are waking up to glass-covered streets and damaged cars.
A CBS 2 nonstop news crew captured video of the smashed windows after thieves broke into at least seven cars in the first block of West 16th Street.
Police said the thieves got out of a blue Dodge Charger around 1:30 a.m. No arrests have been made.
Streets and Sanitation has been working to sweep the broken glass from the street. Many items inside the cars were also left in the middle of the street.
CBS 2's Marissa Perlman spoke with neighbors heading out to work when they saw their car's entire back window smashed out.
One woman said she had medical equipment in her car, but it was luckily not stolen.
One of the car owners told CBS 2 that he came outside to find his car damaged and his sunglasses missing. Luckily, the thieves did not open his trunk.
"It's frustrating," Kenny Liu said.
Some car owners talked about the expense of the damage.
"I mean, it's still finances out of your pocket. Something that you didn't budget for that's gotta be fixed," Another neighbor said. "It's not a good feeling. It changes your mood automatically."
Just last week, another rampage was reported, with more than 20 cars damaged near 21st and Prairie. Neighbors there are calling for more patrols and more cameras.
