Near-Dead Dog Found On Indiana Street
PORTAGE, Ind. (STMW) -- Portage Animal Control is investigating the case of a dog who was found emaciated on a Portage street on Sunday. The dog died three days later.
Warden Rick Henderlong said that he presented his findings to the Porter County Prosecutor's Office on Wednesday, but no animal neglect charges have been filed yet against the owner.
Portage resident Dave Jones was driving along Swanson Road on Sunday afternoon when he saw a miniature pinscher struggling to stand up. He drove past before turning around to see if the dog needed medical attention.
"It needed help," Jones said. "It looked like a skeleton with skin draped over it."
Jones said the dog didn't make a sound as he picked it up.
He took the dog home, but with two kids and two dogs, it wasn't the quietest place for a sick animal.
Jones' friend Tina Hayes took the dog to her house and tried to feed and the dog and get it to drink some water. She was successful for a while, but after a point, the dog couldn't keep anything down.
Hayes didn't have a lot of money to pay for the dog's treatment, so she called around for some assistance before reaching Cherie Bishop with Last Chance Rescue.
Bishop took the dog to a veterinarian, but they were unable to save the dog, who died Tuesday.
"The poor thing suffered horribly," Hayes said. "And it's traumatizing for us as well.
