Navy SEALs Who Killed Bin Laden Likely Started At Great Lakes

NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. (CBS/WBBM) -- Members of the U.S. Navy SEAL team that killed Osama bin Laden would have started their training at Naval Station Great Lakes on the North Shore.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Mike Krauser reports, the SEALs likely got their start at the Naval Special Warfare Preparatory School on the Great Lakes campus.

That is where the road to becoming an elite Navy SEAL begins.

Afterward, it's off to the Naval Special Warfare Center in Coronado, Calif., for more training, including what's known as "Hell Week."

"Hell Week" involves what NavySeals.com describes as "5 1/2 days of cold, wet, brutally difficult operational training on fewer than four hours of sleep." Only the most fit – physically and mentally – make it through.

Back at Naval Station Great Lakes, they're celebrating the 100th anniversary this year. The first group of recruits reported for training there on July 1, 1911, and since, more than 3.5 million sailors have begun their Navy careers at the camp.
