Navy Pier's Outdoor Skating Rink Opens
(CBS) -- Navy Pier's outdoor skating rink debuted Friday, appropriately enough, on the hottest day of the year.
"It feels really refreshing," Natash Filin said.
She and her son, Nikita, were first on the rink, when Skate by the Lake at Navy Pier opened.
"It's an amazing idea to have ice in the summer," Filin says.
Ten thousand gallons of water and glycol create the rink, which depends on a pump system.
"It keeps cycling over and over," says Patrick Gardner.
