National Weather Service Confirms 24 Tornadoes Last Weekend

CHICAGO (CBS) -- At least 24 tornadoes touched ground across the state during last weekend's severe weather outbreak, according to a report released the National Weather Service Monday.

In a four-hour stretch Nov. 17 across Central and Southern Illinois, 14 of the 24 twisters were classified as "significant," meteorologists said.

Those included two EF-4 tornadoes that accounted for three of six deaths reported in the storms and 127 of 147 total injuries.

The tornado that devastated parts of the town of Washington traveled 46.2 miles, the farthest of any of the reported tornadoes, the report said.

The severe weather system also produced 28 tornadoes in Indiana, the third highest number of tornadoes in a single day in the state's history, meteorologists said.
