Nation Of Islam Marches In South Shore Neighborhood
CHICAGO (CBS) – In an attempt to stop the shootings and save lives, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan visited the South Shore neighborhood Monday to reach out to inner-city youth.
CBS 2's Marissa Bailey reports.
They call themselves the "Fruit of Islam." Men from the Nation of Islam met at the Mosque on South Stony Island and boarded buses to the South Shore.
They handed out flyers, newspapers and DVDs entitled "Justifiable Homicide: Youth in Peril."
Farrakhan led more than 500 men door to door. One local, Tone-Tone, as he wanted to be called, talked with Farrakhan face to face.
"It's an honor to be that close to him," he said.
Residents said they hope the visit makes a difference. They said it was a nice surprise.
Mayor Emanuel and Police Supt. Garry McCarthy both released statements tonight in support of Farrakhan's outreach efforts.
Monday was the second time Nation of Islam members have taken to the streets. The first time was last week.
