Mystery Bullet Pierces Mobile Home, Hits Woman In Leg
EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (CBS) – A 57-year-old East Chicago, Ind. woman was injured Saturday morning when a bullet pierced the outside of a mobile home, passed through objects inside and hit her in the leg.
Nancy Laka, the mother-in-law of the victim, says the sound of the bullet woke her up Saturday morning.
"It went through my son's bedsprings, through the wall in his bedroom, into the bathroom and right through her leg," Laka told CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot.
"Her leg went up, but she didn't feel any pain, and then she I guess looked down and she was full of blood," Laka added.
Luckily, the bullet went clean through and did not rupture an artery, she said.
A police source says the bullet, from a .38-caliber handgun, appears to have been fired from an area near vacant homes across a pond. Sources also say police are reviewing video from a nearby pod camera, to see if it captured the shooting at Harbour Point Estates.
Laka says police recovered the bullet in the house.
She says her daughter-in-law is in pain and will need about two weeks to recover before heading back to work.
"The doctor said she got an early Christmas present," Laka said.
Police say no one is in custody and the investigation is ongoing.
