Mundelein Village Board Tables Ordinance To Allow Chickens, Bees In Backyards
MUNDELEIN, Ill. (CBS) -- Residents of a Mundelein are at odds over the birds and the bees – in the literal sense, that is.
As WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports, opinion is divided in Mundelein over a proposal to allow residents to keep chicken coops and beehives in their backyards.
At the latest village board meeting, supporters endorsed a proposed zoning change, as part of a growing movement to provide locally-grown food and a flourishing environment, the Daily Herald reports.
But opponents have more immediate concerns. The Daily Herald quotes one speaker, Roger Kippenhan as saying he grew up on a farm and got a strong whiff of chickens every day.
He said he had to put up with "the smell of feces in the late afternoons of the hot summer," and said, "Could you imagine what your neighborhood would smell like?" the Daily Herald reports.
The beehives also drew concerns at the meeting, especially given the potential lethal reactions to bee stings by those who are allergic, the Daily Herald reports.
The board tabled the ordinance by a vote of 4-2. It is unclear whether it will come up again.
