Multi-Vehicle Pileup Shuts Down Outbound Kennedy
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A multi-vehicle pileup early Tuesday shut down the inbound Kennedy Expressway, causing a major headache for early-morning commuters.
As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, the accident at Cumberland Avenue shut down all lanes of the Kennedy Expressway sometime before 6 a.m.
The Illinois Department of Transportation said five vehicles were involved in the accident, but Habermehl counted seven – six cars and one box truck.
The crash caused backups west all the way from Busse Road to the Kennedy junction on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway, and a standstill on the ramps from the Tri-State Tollway.
In addition, the crash caused a gapers block on the outbound Kennedy that jammed up traffic from Harlem Avenue to Cumberland Avenue.
The outbound lanes had reopened by 6:15 a.m.
