Mullin: Cutler's Return A 'Franchise Decision'

(WSCR) Jay Cutler's return to the Bears is uncertain. What is certain, however, is rushing him back could cost the Bears in the long run.

Cutler admitted that the flexibility of his thumb may never be the same after pins and screws were inserted, making it all the more important for him to heal properly.

"The long-term flexibility -- I don't know. He's a young enough guy where this could be restored," John 'Moon' Mullin of Comcast Sportsnet told The McNeil and Spiegel Show. "But it's not going to be restored if he comes back early and re-injures the thing. This is a franchise decision, so they've got to take this smart."

Mullin added that there's really no way of telling when Cutler will be back -- it all depends on the healing process.

"Who knows how fast people heal to begin with," Mullin said. "You don't know the precise severity. The one thing he did say that I thought was the most encouraging if you're a fan or a Bear, is that there is no ligament damage. When you start talking about pins and screws, this is not an insignificant injury."
