Muller: Can The New York Jets Ever Just Shut Up And Play?

By Shawn Muller--

If I were a New York Jets fan, I wouldn't even bother watching the teams playoff game this weekend against New England at Gillette Stadium. This game is going to get flat out ugly. Since I am not a fan of the New York Jets (thank heavens), I get the pleasure of laughing through every minute of the imminent beat down that is about to be handed out by the Patriots. Why is it going to get ugly for New York, you ask?

Well, just ask Jets cornerback, Antonio Cromartie.

It is one thing for a coach or a player to say something so stupid that it could potentially be used as bulletin board material. It is another thing for a coach or a player on a team to say something so stupid that it could potentially be used by Tom Brady and the New England Patriots for motivation in the playoffs. It's bad enough that we have to hear Jets head coach Rex Ryan flap his gums every time he gets the opportunity to do so. But it is the words that came out of cornerback Antonio Cromartie's mouth, not Ryan's (shocking, I know), that could spell the death sentence for the New York Jets this season. He was foolish enough to direct his comments at Tom Brady. Not good.

During an interview with New York Daily News reporter Gary Meyers, Cromartie was asked about Rex Ryan's accusations that Brady has had less-than sportsmanlike, post-touchdown celebrations against the Jets. Cromartie said, "We see it a lot [finger-pointing after a score]. He does it a lot. That's the kind of guy he is. We don't really give a damn, to tell you the truth."

Wait…it get's better.

Mr. Cromartie then blessed us with these gems: " He's an ***hole. **** him. That's what I think about him. I don't really give a damn about him. I don't have to play against him. I play against the receivers."

Didn't quite think those comments through did you there Mr. Cromartie?

The last time I checked, Tom Brady owns three Super Bowl rings. You, however, own zero. What on earth would possibly make you utter those comments just days before the biggest game of the season…against a sure-fire hall of fame quarterback…and his Patriots teammates? Does Rex Ryan teach lessons on how to be a complete jug-head at every team meeting, before the Jets watch game film? In case you forgot, Antonio, you play the cornerback position. Your main duty on the football field is to cover the wide receivers. Who do you think throws wide receivers the football? That's right, the quarterback does you moron, so yes, you DO play against Tom Brady and he is probably going to pick you apart without mercy.

Antonio Cromartie managed to turn what should have been a great playoff game between two divisional rivals into something personal. But he didn't just make his attack personal against Tom Brady. Cromartie made it personal to the entire New England Patriots team when he attacked their captain. In case Antonio and his Jets teammates need a history lesson, the last time any of their players (and head coach) trash-talked the Patriots prior to a game, New England ended up waxing New York to the tune of 45-3 on December, 6th. Not too bright, buddy….not to bright.

Is it so hard for some players to just shut their mouths and play the damn game? All Antonio Cromartie has done is make himself look ignorant and arrogant at the same time. There is no good that could come out of his remarks.

You don't poke a tiger with a stick, because sooner or later, it will rip you to shreds. You just poked yourself a tiger. It would do you wise to remember those word Mr. Cromartie.

Good luck on Sunday.
