Mount Prospect Bakery Dishing Out Cubs-Themed Cookies By The Dozens
(CBS) -- The Cubs going all the way to the World Series would be a sweet treat, but a Mt. Prospect bakery is cooking up something to give fans their just desserts.
The batter's up every day at Central Continental Bakery. "We sold these cookies pretty much all season," Bobby Czerniak, who works at the bakery, says.
But in the lineup now are some heavy-hitters like Javier Baez and Jake Arietta.
"Obviously when they kept on winning, we kept on selling more and more and more," Czerniak says.
Sales have jumped from two dozen to over 60 dozen cookies a day.
"It's kind of steamrolled all the way to the playoffs."
In fact, the demand for cubs sweets has given the cookie decorators a workout, and pushed Halloween cookies to the side of the showcase.
"I got phone calls from Wisconsin and I got a phone call from Denver the other day. They wanted us to ship them," Czerniak says.
During CBS 2's Facebook Live chat from the Mount Prospect location, viewers shared some of their favorite edible cubs creations, including some you order at a bar.
But the best treat was meeting Ginny Young and her family.
"I was a Cubs fan since I was that high. I walked to Wrigley Field because we couldn't afford the bus so we walked," Young says. "We paid $3 to get in then. After about the 4th inning, the ushers let us go in the box seats because nobody went in those days."
The three best-selling shirt cookies are Bryant, Baez and Rizzo. If the Cubs make it to the World Series, Central Continental expects to ice up over 100 to 125 dozen cookies daily.
