Motorist Gets Out Of Vehicle To Help Ducklings, Is Fatally Struck By Limo
SCHILLER PARK, Ill (STMW) -- A man was fatally struck Monday morning by a limousine on the Tri-State Tollway near O'Hare International Airport after he had gotten out of his car to shoo a family of ducklings off the road.
About 9:30 a.m., the man was driving northbound on the Tri-State (I-294) near mile post 38.2, in Schiller Park, "when he came about these ducks in the road," Illinois State Police Tollway District Sgt. Hasan said. The driver got out of the car and tried to get the ducks off the road, "when a vehicle driving northbound didn't see him and subsequently struck him," the sergeant said.
The vehicle that struck the man was a limousine, the sergeant said.
The victim, 38-year-old Edward Gardner, of 1616 Lonsdale Ave. in Naperville, was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead at 1:24 p.m., according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
No citations were issued to the driver of the limousine, who stopped at the scene, Hasan said. "It was just a freak accident."
The victim was traveling with his girlfriend, who remained in the car, Hasan said. She was not injured.
