Mother Pleads For Help In Solving Mystery Of Son's Hit-And-Run Death
(CBS) -- For the first time, a Lincolnwood mother speaks out about the hit-and-run mystery surrounding her son's death.
Aaron Thal was waiting for a bus when he was run over by two cars in March. Now the search for answers as to how he ended up in the middle of the street continues. CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot has this Original Report.
"He was just 19. He had his whole life ahead of him," said Norma Thal, Aaron's mother.
Aaron graduated from The Cove School in Northbrook just months before his death. On March 10 of this year, the teen was waiting for a bus at Touhy and Kostner in Lincolnwood, at about 6:30 in the morning. Two cars ran over Aaron. What's not known, is how the 19 year-old ended up in the middle of the street in the first place.
"I want to know what happened to my son," said Norma Thal.
The drivers of the two cars that ran over Aaron did stop. His mother and Lincolnwood Police believe it's possible Aaron was hit first by another vehicle before he was run over by the two other cars. A black pick-up truck was captured on video from a red light camera. The driver hit their brakes at about the same spot where Aaron was found.
"It's hard to fathom how somebody would do that and not stop," said Norma Thal. "If it was someone you cared about you would wish someone would have an act of kindness."
"That's really our focus right now, is to make a public plea to get information, to get evidence, that will help not only the police, but help the family get some closure," said Thal family attorney, Tara Devine of Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C.
Aaron's mother is offering a $2,000 reward for information in the case. She says her son helped the elderly and donated money monthly to help children in need overseas. She now hopes someone will show the same kind of integrity her son had and come forward, with what they know, about her son's death.
"I want justice for my boy," said Norma Thal.
Lincolnwood Police say in a statement: "Our hope is there may still be witnesses out there that thought this incident was resolved and now, they may come forward."
Lincolnwood Police and the Thal family attorney, Tara Devine are asking anyone with information about the incident to call them.
Aaron's school, The Cove School, has now named a scholarship in his honor. The recipient must share the same leadership qualities Aaron exemplified during his life.
