More Than Dozen Cows Die In I-80 Semi Wreck
MARKHAM (CBS) -- A south suburban interstate ramp was reopened Sunday night, eight hours after a semi truck hauling cattle overturned -- leaving more than a dozen dead animals and others roaming the road.
The ramp was re-opened at 7:15 p.m. after a long clean-up process, Illinois State Police District Chicago Sgt. Anthony Ostrowski said.
A semi truck hauling cattle crashed and flipped about 11:15 a.m. on an eastbound ramp from Interstate 80 to northbound Tri-State Tollway (I-294), Illinois State Police District Chicago Trooper Ricardo Sandoval said.
"The driver lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn and lean against the concrete barrier," Ostrowski said.
There was no indication the trucker was injured, but the man was cited with driving too fast for conditions, Ostrowski. His name was not immediately available.
Sixteen cows perished and 22 survived and were placed on another truck and sent on their way to a livestock company in Peotone, the sergeant said.
It was not immediately known how all 16 cows died but some were killed when they fell off the ramp after the crash. Others were roaming the ramp.
