More Than $5,600 Worth Of Onions Stolen In Darien
DARIEN, Ill. (CBS) -- Someone has stolen thousands of dollars worth of onions from a Darien truck yard.
As WBBM Newsradio's Nancy Harty reports, sometime between 6 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Sunday, thieves took 2 1/2 pallets worth of onions off of a flatbed trailer parked just off the Stevenson Expressway at Lemont Road, Darien police Sgt. Michael Campo said.

The driver reported the theft to police at 9:41 p.m. Tuesday after he returned and discovered the goods missing, Campo said. The onions, valued at $5,625, were en route to an Indianapolis produce store when they were taken.
Semi trucks and flatbeds operating in the area typically park overnight in the yard, Campo said. It is surrounded by fence except for a gap that abuts the city's public works facility, which is where the suspects may have entered, he said.
Darien police Officer Nick Skweres said this was one of the weirdest theft cases the town has had.
"I can't recall the last time we had an onion theft in Darien," Skweres said.
There is no word on what someone might do with that many onions.
Darien police continue to investigate.
