Montreal-Based Tea Café Chain Coming To Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Canada-based tea café is setting up shop on three fashionable strips in Chicago.

As WBBM Newsradio's Kris Kridel reports, the Montreal-based DAVIDsTEA Inc. becomes the latest company to compete in the tea café business in Chicago.

Crain's Chicago Business reports DAVIDsTEA will open three shops in Lincoln Park, Bucktown and Lakeview this fall.

All of the DAVIDsTEA locations will open on fashionable avenues known for boutiques. The Lincoln Park location will be at 924 W. Armitage Ave., the Lakeview location at 3530 N. Southport Ave., and the Bucktown location at 1645 N. Damen Ave., Crain's reports.

DAVIDsTEA sells traditional black and herbal teas such as Earl Grey and chamomile, as well as its own blends, such as a concoction known as Read My Lips made with China black tea, vanilla, peppermint, chocolate

The shops will 150 varieties of looseleaf tea. The chain also sells tea-drinking accessories and operates a café, Crain's reports.

In Chicago, DAVIDsTEA will take on the locally-based Argo Tea, which has several locations throughout the city. One of them, at 958 W. Armitage Ave., is just down the block from a planned DAVIDsTEA location.

Tea shops both corporate and independent are booming in many parts of Chicago. A pedestrian on Broadway between Belmont Avenue and Diversey Parkway will find an Argo Tea at 3135 N. Broadway, the LooseLeaf Lounge tea shop and performance space at 2915 N. Broadway, and Intelligentsia – a coffee operation also known for its tea blends – at 3123 N. Broadway.

The new DAVIDsTEA shops will each employ 12 to 15 part-time employees and are expected to be open until 9 p.m. every day of the week, Crain's reported. They are set to open in October and November.
