Moms Being Honored Across Chicago Area
(CBS) -- From the city to the suburbs families and organizations are honoring mothers.
CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker shows us how so many people are coming up with different and unique ways to celebrate.
On the eve of Mother's Day in Dolton, where the murder rate was the highest in the south suburbs Earl Walker is handing out roses hoping to bring a smile to mothers who lost children and those who worry about the village's crime rate.
"With so much negativity going on in the world so we wanted to, on a positive note, wish you a happy Mother's Day," Walker told one mother.
A welcome surprise to the moms and the children who love them.
In Englewood, the EarthHeart organization celebrates the moms they serve and support. Single moms like Elizabeth Harris. She was homeless with her three children for two years until Earthheart helped her find a home and get to college.
"It takes a village and it goes back, way back when women actually helped each other," Harris said. "I love the village that I have now."
Four-year-old Micah Shaw made a card for his mom, Cora. He joined other children at the Ashland Addison Florist making flower arrangements for mom.
With the help of Dad, Avery will deliver a bouquet to mom, Angie McMonigal.
"She makes our entire life possible," Avery said. "She keeps everything together. She keeps everybody on track and we couldn't do it without her."
Tomorrow, they'll all deliver the same message.
Tow truck owner Earl Walker passed out 300 roses in Dolton.
This was the first time in its more than 80 year history that Ashland Addison Florist sponsored a craft day. They say it was a huge success.
The EarthHeart Foundation also sent a message of peace with a march through the Englewood neighborhood.
