Mom Injured In Hit-And-Run Over Thanksgiving Goes Home For Christmas
(CBS) -- She was the second biggest story on Black Friday.
After all the news on sales and retail figures came a horrifying South Side story in which a mother was struck and critically injured while putting her baby in the car the day prior.
"I've been through a tremendous ordeal," Tiarria Stallworth said from her nursing home bed on Sunday. "It's a possibility that I would not be here today, so I just thank God that I'm alive."
Tiarria was struck by a white sport-utility vehicle in the 8700 block of South Burley Avenue, police said.
"We really didn't think she was going to make it at first," her niece Shamika Burton tells CBS 2's Brad Edwards.
Tiarria doesn't remember much of the accident.
"I was told by my nine-year old-son that it was a lady that hit me," she said in an iPhone-recorded video provided by her family. "And my son said, 'You hit my mom.' That's when she immediately looked at me jumped back in her vehicle and left."
The driver, who was traveling east on 87th Street, remains at-large.
Tiarria survived the critical first few hours and has since gained back much of her movement and memory.
"I didn't think it was possible," she said.
Tiarria is expected to be released Monday. Now, she'll be home for Christmas -- the holiday after her family held vigil in a hospital room.
"I'm very excited," she said. "I will be home with my family for Christmas."
