Mom, Newborn From Hickory Hills Dead
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A southwest suburban pregnant woman and her unborn child died Thursday after she had been suffering from the flu for at least two weeks, authorities said.
Police responded to the 7700 block of West 91st Place in Hickory Hills after receiving a report of an unresponsive pregnant woman who had suffered from the flu for two weeks, according to Hickory Hills police Lt. Tim Stevens.
Margaret Jefferson was declared dead at 7:10 a.m. at Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights and her child, identified only as "Baby Girl Jefferson," was pronounced dead at the same hospital at 1:14 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
It is believed that Jefferson died from pulmonary embolism, which is common among pregnant mothers suffering from the flu, Stevens said.
The baby was delivered stillborn at the hospital, Stevens said.
