Missing Chicago Hiker's Remains May Have Been Found
(CBS) – Investigators in Colorado may have found the remains of a Chicago hiker who's been missing for more than a year and a half.
James Nelson, 31, went on a five-day, 25-mile hike in Colorado in October 2010 but hasn't been seen since.
On Friday, a hiker found human remains near the campsite Nelson may have used.
Nelson's mother, Cathy Nelson of Iowa City, Iowa, says clothing near the remains matched her son's.
"I'm pretty devastated. I'm glad he finally has been found and that we can have some closure and start healing," Cathy Nelson said in a telephone interview Sunday.
A DNA test is being done, but the family believes the remains are those of James, she said.
A police agency in Colorado says a notebook located at the campsite shows James Nelson might have been suffering from altitude sickness.
Nelson was records director for the Chicago-based Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and had resided here for the last several years.
