Mets' Matt Harvey Has Bladder Blood Clots
(CBS) The mysterious ailment of Mets ace Matt Harvey has been revealed, and it won't cost him an Opening Day start -- just some embarrassment.
Harvey is dealing with bladder blood clots, the cause of not urinating frequently enough. He addressed this with reporters on Tuesday, via CBS New York.
"It started with a bladder infection, and it created a blood clot in the bladder," Harvey said. "I passed it yesterday. It wasn't a great first day (after) my 27th birthday. But we cleared that. And then we had a little procedure done this morning just to go in and check the bladder, and everything was clear.
"I guess the main issue is I hold my urine in for too long instead of peeing regularly. I guess I have to retrain my bladder to use the restroom a little bit more instead of holding it in. I guess that's what caused the bladder infection."
Harvey, 27, is the ace of a Mets team that defeated the Cubs in the NLCS and reached the World Series, losing to the Royals in Game 7. He finished the 2015 season 13-8 with a 2.71 ERA and 188 strikeouts.
The Mets are counting on Harvey to lead a rotation that's arguably the best in baseball, joined with Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard.
