Metra Train Strikes, Kills Pedestrian In Vernon Hills

VERNON HILLS, Ill. (CBS) -- A train struck and killed a pedestrian early Thursday in Vernon Hills, prompting authorities to halt the train and leaving early-morning commuters delayed.
CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports Metra North Central Service Line train No. 100 left Vernon Hills at 5:50 a.m., and soon afterward struck the pedestrian at Butterfield Road south of Illinois Route 60. The train had been due into Chicago at 6:55 a.m., but was halted after the accident.
The pedestrian was killed, Habermehl reported. Further details on the pedestrian were not available.
No one on the train was injured.
All trains behind the one that hit the pedestrian were also be stopped until the Lake County coroner's office could respond to the scene.
Also, Butterfield Road was closed south of Illinois 60 until further notice, as Vernon Hills, Mundelein and Metra police investigated.
Later, passengers were placed on another train No. 104, which was to arrive at 7:47 a.m., while No. 102, which did not take any of the patients from No. 100, arrived in Chicago 35 minutes late at 7:25 a.m., Metra spokesman Tom Miller told the Sun-Times Media Wire. After that, service returned to normal.
