Metra Train Strikes Car In Midlothian
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Thousands of commuters were delayed on Metra's Rock Island Line on Monday evening after police say a train hit a vehicle that went around crossing gates in Midlothian.
Midlothian Police say witnesses tell them the crossing gates at 149th Street and Pulaski Road had activated.
But the driver of a vehicle went through the crossing anyway and was hit by the inbound Metra train.
The car's passenger was injured and taken to the hospital.
Police Chief David Burke says the train dragged the vehicle for about 75 feet.
It was 13 years ago when a 19-year-old man was killed when he was hit by a Metra train at the same intersection.
Police said he tried to ride his 10-speed bicycle around the crossing gates.
