Metra Train Hits Elderly Cyclist In Mount Prospect
MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. (CBS) -- Trains on Metra's Union Pacific/Northwest Line were being delayed Wednesday morning, after a cyclist was struck by a train near Mount Prospect.
Metra spokesman Tom Miller said the cyclist was hit and killed by an inbound train around 7:50 a.m.
As a result, Metra halted trains on the UP/Northwest Line, creating delays of up to two hours for some trains. Service resumed around 10 a.m.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed a 95-year-old man was struck and killed, but his name was not released.
Details on what happened are not yet known.
And, a woman was struck and killed by a South Shore Line train near Pines, Ind.
Officials say the accident involved a Chicago-bound train that was traveling from South Bend.
The name of the victim and further circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet available.
