Metra Train Hits Abandoned Car At Crossing, For Second Time
DES PLAINES, Ill. (CBS) -- For the second time in a week, a Metra train hit an abandoned car Monday morning at a minor road crossing in Des Plaines.
Sometime before 6:30 a.m., the inbound North Central line train hit a car that was lying abandoned on the tracks at the Seegers Road crossing, south of Golf Road and west of Rand Road in Des Plaines.
The car was pushed out of the way, and the train was released to keep going by 6:39 a.m. Train No. 100 was due into downtown Chicago from Antioch at 6:55 a.m.
But the accident has left many neighbors perplexed, given that a nearly identical crash happened at the same location just this past Tuesday.
Around 6:55 a.m. that day, North Central Train No. 100 struck another abandoned car at the Seegers Road crossing.
In that incident, CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, the train was delayed far longer, because the wrecked car became stuck to the front of the train and had to be pried off.
It was not immediately clear whether there was any relationship between the Monday morning crash and the incident last week.
