Metra officials say the increase will cover a budget deficit caused by higher fuel costs and other administrative costs.
Fares for Northwest Indiana riders on the South Shore will also go up 5 percent, beginning on Feb. 15. The increase for monthly pass holders will go into effect on March 1.
