Men Use Fire As Ruse To Break Into Home In North Suburb
EVANSTON (STMW)-- Police in north suburban Evanston are looking to four to five men accused of breaking into a home and telling those inside there was a fire in an attempt to distract them before rummaging through the home's drawers and demanding drug money.
The home invasion happened Thursday about 3:20 p.m. in the 600 block of Judson, a release from Evanston police said.
Officers spoke to the victims, who told them four to five men had forced their way into their home. Once inside, one of the men told the victims, "It's a fire in the back," in an attempt to occupy and distract them.
The men then began to rummage through drawers attempting to find items of value.
One of the men then told the victims they needed money for drugs and asked if they had any money. One of the men then took out a small amount of money from one of the victims' pants pocket, the release said.
A woman in the home tried to call police, but her phone was taken and was broken by one of the offenders.
As they continued to search the home for money and items of value, one of the victims was able to leave the house, flag down a passing vehicle and notify police, the release said.
Officers responded but could not find the suspects. They are described as four to five men between 30 and 40. They were of Middle Eastern or European descent, the release said.
