Men Arrested Trying To Access Roof At Hotel InterContinental

By John Dodge

CHICAGO (CBS) -- One day after two men were spotted on the ledge of a posh Michigan Avenue hotel taking pictures, Chicago police arrested two men trying to gain access to the roof on Wednesday.

Two men in their 20s were arrested by Chicago police after trying to gain access to an unauthorized area of the Hotel InterContinental in the 500 block of North Michigan.

On Tuesday, pictures posted on Facebook showed a man standing on the edge of the InterContinental Hotel, 505 North Michigan Ave., shooting images of the street below. Ice or snow was visible next to him.

The men appeared to be dressed in street clothes, and it was later determined that they were photographers who, as a hobby, attempt to take photos from the top of tall structures. One of the men appears to have posted online several pictures from the roofs of buildings.

It was unclear whether the men arrested on Wednesday were the same people spotted on Tuesday.

In December 2012, a young man trying to take pictures atop the same hotel died after falling into a smokestack.

Fire crews cut a hole in the chimney about 42 stories above Michigan Avenue, before freeing the 23-year-old and taking him to the hospital.

The victim, Nicholas Wieme, was dining near the hotel when he decided to go to the top of the hotel to check out the smokestack. He may have gotten access to the roof though a restricted hospitality suite located near the top of the building.

Hotel management said they were investigating the incidents.
