McKnight: Wednesday Brings Bad News For Cubs
By Connor McKnight--
Tough news for the Cubs today as they'll have to put two starters on the disabled list after only five games. Andrew Cashner strained his rotator cuff during his first career start Tuesday against the Diamondbacks. General Manager Jim Hendry said Cashner would not pick up a ball for the next 10-14 days or so and then begin the process of getting back into the starting rotation. Randy Wells heads to the DL with a forearm strain. Luckily for both the Cubs and Wells, the strain does not appear to have any effect on the elbow or ulnar nerve. Wells--like Cashner--won't pick up a ball for about two weeks before he's able to make a push to get back into the rotation.
Hendry mentioned that the team will need a starter for Sunday's game against the Brewers and Tuesday's game against the Astros. Casey Coleman will be called up to the 25-man roster and is the most likely candidate for Sunday's start. The Cubs will use Thursday's off-day to talk as an organization but James Russell is the most likely starter for Tuesday as it seems internal options are the only ones being considered so far.
