McCormick Place Officials Lose Battle On Labor Change
CHICAGO (AP/CBS) - A judge has issued an injunction barring enforcement of state-imposed work-rule changes at Chicago's McCormick Place convention center. CBS 2's Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports.
U.S. District Judge Ronald Guzman issued the permanent injunction Wednesday in a case involving Local 727 of the Teamsters and the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters.
In March, Guzman ruled many of the reforms are illegal because the state Legislature went beyond the terms of union contracts in ordering them. The judge said the legislators' action overturned collective bargaining rights in violation of the National Labor Relations Act.
One rule tossed gave exhibitors the right to do much of their work setting up and dismantling convention booths rather than having to use union workers.
Attorney Terrance McGann said the ruling "vindicates the carpenters' union." McCormick Place officials are appealing Guzman's ruling.
