Mayor Emanuel Expands Local-Federal Crime-Fighting Crackdown
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayor Rahm Emanuel says it's a crime-fighting game-changer.
Touting crime-reduction results in two violent neighborhoods, the city on Friday said it would expand the program throughout the city.
This morning, the mayor announced the "violence reduction initiative" will cover more high-crime districts.
Here are some key points:
- The initiative re-assigns more officers to at risk areas, from other parts of the city.
- The Chicago Police Department will collaborates with federal agencies, including the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The expanded program will add additional federal agents and analysts to provide support, share intelligence and focus efforts for the next four months
- They'll put special emphasis on fighting gang and drug-related crimes and reducing the number of vacant buildings that harbor criminals.
- Emanuel says the initiative already has led to a 29-percent reduction in murders in Englewood and Garfield Park.
