1 Dead, 7 Injured After Shooting In Wrightwood
CHICAGO (CBS)-- One person died and seven were injured in a mass shooting in the Wrightwood neighborhood early Friday morning.
The victims were at a gathering in the 2500 block of West 79th Street when at least two men started shooting, just after midnight.
A 26-year-old man was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. Seven others were taken to hospitals in fair to critical condition. Five of them were being treated at Advocate Christ Medical Center. The victims range from 22 to 41 years old.
Chicago police said several weapons were recovered from the scene. Officers were seen recovering at least one handgun from a trash can. Police also picked up other items, including baseball bats.
More than 80 evidence markers were scattered around the crime scene.
Two cars at the scene were blocked off with police tape. There were skid marks on the ground from where it appeared one car crashed into the other. Both cars also had bullet holes in them.
Another car was taped off a few blocks away at 83rd and Damen, although it was not immediately clear if it was connected to the shooting.
One neighbor said he heard at least 15 gunshots. Another woman who lives close to the area described what she heard.
"I heard it. It started from 79th and it came all the way down here. It was like a machine gun. It was just going off," she said.
No one was in custody Friday morning. Area One detectives were investigating.
