Martz: Bears Would Like 'A Couple More Veteran Linemen'

(CBS) Bears offensive coordinator met at length with the media Tuesday for the first time since the NFC Championship Game in January.

Of course, among many topics discussed, Martz addressed his much talked about offensive line and admitted it could use a couple more bodies.

"I think we would all like to have a couple more veteran linemen," he said. "I don't think that's any different than any camp right now. I don't know if you can ever have enough offensive linemen -- quality veteran offensive linemen -- to do just what you're talking about to challenge and push guys and make them better, but that's the case throughout the league I think."

The Bears made the decision Monday to stick second-year tackle J'Marcus Webb at left tackle and rookie Gabe Carimi at right tackle, meaning there isn't a whole lot of experience on the outside. That, combined with the departure of long-time veteran Olin Kreutz on the inside, has left the Bears without a whole lot of leadership on the offensive line. Still, Martz loves the size and potential this group has.

"Large. Yes, large," said Mike Martz said. "We're not a finesse, cute, cut, pull around and do those kind of things [line]."

Martz also addressed new wide receiver Roy Williams, who has success in his system in Detroit.

"Roy excels when you put it on his plate and say, 'OK, you've got to win this game here on this play,'" Martz said.
