Marmol Out As Cubs Closer
(WSCR) What had been speculated since Carlos Marmol gave up three runs, blowing the Cubs lead in the Thursday's game, became official Friday when manager Dale Sveum announced Marmol is out as the Cubs closer.
According to a report, the two met in Sveum's office before Friday's game and Marmol was "fine with it, he understood," Sveum said.
Sveum also said that Cubs left-hander James Russell and rookie Rafael Dolis will act as dual closers for the time being.
"We'll wing it," Sveum said.
Marmol blew the Cubs 3-0 lead in Cincinnati on Thursday when he walked three batters and gave up a hit without recording a single out.
As for the future of Marmol, Sveum said he should be ready to continue pitching.
"I told him just to be ready to pitch any time," Sveum said. "Hopefully, we can get him going to where we give him another chance and get him back in that role."
