Many Blackhawks Fans Miss The Big Game After Storm Knocks Out Power
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Those who got to see the Blackhawks rally to beat the Bruins and win the Stanley Cup last night won't soon forget it, but unfortunately neither will those who didn't get to see the big win, after a strong, fast-moving storm knocked out power.
WBBM Newsradio's Veronica Carter reports it's bad enough when the power goes out, but for Blackhawks fans with no electricity during Game 6, it was heartbreaking.
"Very disappointed to have missed it," said Deb Lewis, of Rogers Park, who lost power just before the game started, and never got it back last night. "We didn't really get a lot of rain, we just kept hearing thunder, and so that was kind of strange and surprising."
Storms Leave Many Fans In Dark For Big Game
About 300,000 homes and businesses were left without power yesterday, after a powerful but fast-moving string of storms blasted through the Chicago area, bringing wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph, and knocking down trees.
Though ComEd was able to restore power to some 218,000 customers overnight, around 82,000 were still in the dark by dawn, and plenty more never got power back in time to catch the game.
Instead of eating some great game food while watching the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup, "right now we're eating butter bread by candlelight."
Lewis said she's still thrilled her team won, even if she didn't get to see it happen.
"We love Chicago hockey in general. We like the Hawks, we like the Wolves, and we like how fast the game goes," she said.
Lewis said she almost wished the series went to Game 7, just so she could see it. Next year, maybe it's time for another Chicago team to bring home a championship.
"Next year, isn't that a Cubs thing?" she said.
