Manhunt Continues For Gunman Who Killed Security Guard
CHICAGO (CBS) -- More than a day after a security guard was shot and killed at a railyard in south suburban Harvey, police still haven't caught the gunman, but investigators now have a clear image of the suspect.
Harvey police said they are confident surveillance images will lead them to the gunman who shot and killed 38-year-old Tyrone Hardin on Saturday.
Hardin was working his job as a security guard at the Canadian National railyard in the 15800 block of West Avenue Saturday afternoon, when he came across a gunman who was fleeing police.
Police said the man who shot Hardin had earlier stolen a car from a woman at a gas station at 159th and Halsted around 4 p.m., and when police gave chase, he crashed at 159th and Park, and ran into the railyard.
The suspect shot Hardin several times, and then stole his vehicle, officials said. Hardin was taken to Advocate South Suburban Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Hardin's stolen car was found abandoned in East Hazel Crest.
Police said they believe surveillance video from the area will lead them to the gunman.
"The surveillance tapes have taken us a long way, and we can say we've seen some images that we feel very confident will lead us to the capture of this individual," Harvey spokesman Sean Howard said. "Turn yourself in. There's no way you're going to get away with this. Everyone is involved."
As police continued their search for the gunman over the weekend, Hardin's family was left devastated.
"He was working. He did not deserve this at all," said Hardin's sister, Michele. "Anyone knew him knew that he was a caring and loving person."
Hardin's sister said it is difficult to know the shooter is still out there.
