Manchester United To Play Game At Wrigley?
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Wrigley Field has already hosted NHL hockey and college football games in the past couple of years, and a new report says a British soccer invasion might be next for the Friendly Confines.
The English Premier League soccer news website "EPL Talk" reports that the Manchester United soccer team might be considering playing a pre-season "friendly" at Wrigley Field during an upcoming North American tour.
The website reports that a game in Chicago "makes perfect sense," since the city is home to the corporate headquarters of Aon, the official shirt sponsors of the soccer club. But discussions are still ongoing, according to the webstie.
In a tour last year, Manchester United played pre-season friendlies in Toronto, Philadelphia, Kansas City, Houston and Guadalajara.
In recent years, Wrigley Field has been gaining a reputation for sports other than baseball. The ballpark played host to an outdoor Blackhawks-Red Wings hockey game on New Year's Day 2009, and an Illinois-Northwestern football game in November.
Soccer wouldn't be completely new to Wrigley Field either.
The old Chicago Sting professional soccer team played some of its games at the Friendly Confines from 1977 to 1984. The team also used Soldier Field and old Comiskey Park for its outdoor games.
