Man critically wounded when gun discharges in car in Chicago's East Lakeview neighborhood

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was shot in the head and critically wounded as a gun he was passing back and forth with a woman discharged in the East Lakeview neighborhood early Wednesday morning.

At 3:05 a.m., the 25-year-old man and the 23-year-old woman were in a car in the 2900 block of North Pine Grove Avenue, between Wellington Avenue and Surf Street, passing a gun between each other. The gun went off, and the man was struck in the head, police said.

The victim was rushed to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.

The woman was taken into police custody. Charges were pending late Wednesday, police said.

A gun was recovered at the scene.

Belmont Area detectives are investigating.
