The victim, Olubusayo Awolomo was living the American dream. An immigrant's son, he graduated high school at 16, college at 19 and was about to finish a master's degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
A noisy confrontation shortly after 7 p.m. Monday on the driveway in front of his home Monday night ended his dream. Police Chief Bolden Jones said others saw the shooting but are providing few details.
Jones said the body apparently laid on the driveway for 45 minutes until Awolomo's older brother, a medical student, returned home. Police said that at first, he believed a drunk had passed out on the dimly-lit driveway. To his horror, when he bent over the body he found that it was his brother.
"I want to know the motive -- why my son was killed," said Awolomo's father, Olawale, in an emotional appeal Wednesday at Dolton village hall.
"I have forgiven the killer. I don't want to see him," Awolomo said, although he said he is hoping police make an arrest.
The elder Awolomo has worked hard to put his sons through school, driving a taxicab 16 hours most days.
He said he cannot understand why his neighbors have told police so little.
"Please. Let people come forward and identify the killer of my son," he said, with arms outstretched.
Jones said police seek a dark-colored sedan, the make and year unknown, and said the attacker is a slim man, with a dark complexion who wore a brown coat.
