Man Visiting From India Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver
TINLEY PARK, Ill. (CBS) -- A man visiting from India went out for a walk on his birthday Wednesday but never made it to the Tinley Park home where he was staying.
Sixty-one-year-old Raju Shah was hit and killed by a driver who didn't stop.
One day later, that driver is reportedly talking to police, CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports.
"It's really unfortunate because yesterday was also his birthday, and for that to happen to someone on his birthday is just even worse," the victim's niece, Chandni Shah, says.
The collision happened at the intersection of 159th Street and South 80th Avenue. That's where Shah was walking home from Walgreens when he was run down by a driver who left the scence.
He was in town for a wedding.
"He's taken someone really special from us, and it's something we can never get back. I can't even express what this person has done," Shah's niece said.
Tinley Park police contacted the driver last night and arranged for him to turn himself in. The 22-year-old south suburban man did not walk into the police department until around 7 a.m. Thursday.
Shah's family prepared to fly his body back home to the Indian state of Gujarat. It's a sudden shift of emotions that's been difficult to deal with.
