Man Uses Flamethrower To Hold Off Police

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago man is behind bars in Woodstock after police say he crafted a makeshift flamethrower to hold them off when they tried to arrest him on Tuesday.

Police were called to the apartment of William Dunigan III's former girlfriend on a domestic incident.

When they got there, Woodstock Police Sgt. Chip Amati says Dunigan greeted officers with a flamethrower he'd crafted from an aerosol can and a lighter.

"The first officer there had her hair singed and ... the head and face is where she caught the flames," Amati said.

The officer wasn't seriously hurt.

Police caught up with Dunigan after he escaped by jumping from a second floor window.

Dunigan now is charged with arson, domestic battery, reckless conduct and several other counts, including endangering the life of his former girlfriend's young child, who was in the apartment.
