Man Suffers Graze Wound In NW Side Carjacking Attempt
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 50-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the back when two men who tried to rob him in his car in the Northwest Side Avondale neighborhood Sunday morning opened fire on him as he tried to get away from them.
About 6:30 a.m., the man was pulling out from a parking space in the 3300 block of West Welington Avenue, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
A man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt then approached the 2000 4-door Buick, Mirabelli said. The driver rolled down the window and he was asked for the time. As the man glanced at his watch, he noticed another man, also wearing a black hoodie, trying to enter the vehicle, Mirabelli said. Realizing that the two men were going to try to either rob him or take the car, the man stepped on the gas and fled the scene.
As he was driving away, one of the two men took out a handgun and opened fire on the car, according to Mirabelli. The gunshot hit the back of the driver's seat, grazing the man in the back.
He was treated and released for the graze wound at Saint Mary Hospital, according to police. "He was fortunate he was not struck by the gunfire," Mirabelli said.
The two offenders, not yet in police custody, were described as Hispanic males, short in stature, who both wore black hoodies.
