Man Steals Cab, Impersonates Cabbie In South Lakeview

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago man was arrested late Tuesday night in Lakeview, while working as a cabbie – in someone else's cab.

As WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports, the man told police he stole the cab because he wanted to make some money to get his brother out of jail.

Walid Rahmouni, 22, was spotted driving near Kenmore and Wellington avenues, just west of Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, by a cabbie who recognized the cab number, but not the driver.

A phone call was made to the owner, who, at the time, did not know the cab was stolen.

Police were flagged down, and Rahmouni allegedly jumped out of the moving cab, which hit a parked car and caused minor damage

Rahmouni then allegedly took off on foot, and began jumping over fences and running through backyards. Officers finally spotted him hiding under a porch in the 3000 block of North Seminary Avenue, about a block away from where he started.

He was taken to Saint Joseph Hospital for minor injuries, police said. He was later arrested and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of burglary tools.
