Man Shot, Wounded By Police In Garfield Park
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was hospitalized in critical condition Thursday morning after being shot by police during a traffic stop.
Harrison District officers were patrolling near Washington Boulevard and Hamlin Avenue around 5:50 p.m. Wednesday, when they tried to pull over a car for a traffic violation.
The driver fled, and someone with a handgun got out inside Garfield Park. The man pointed the gun at the officers, police said.
One of the officers shot the suspect and he was taken into custody, the statement said.
Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado said one person was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital. Police said the man is expected to survive.
No officers were injured, police said.
A weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.
The Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, is on the scene doing interviews Wednesday night, spokeswoman Andrea Stoutenborough said.
This was the second police-involved shooting this week. Early Tuesday morning, police shot and killed Flint Farmer, 29, as he fled from officers responding to a domestic battery call in the 6200 block of South Wolcott Avenue.
Police said Farmer turned toward them and pulled an object they thought was a handgun, but it later turned out that it was a cell phone.
