Man Shot To Death In Gary
GARY, Ind. (STMW) -- Police in Gary, Ind., were on their way to break up an argument in a gangway of Delaney Community Housing Development early Saturday when they heard gunfire, then found Laroi Griffin, 32, shot to death.
The crowd that quickly gathered near the scene at 21st Avenue and Polk Street became unruly, prompting police to request Lake County K-9 officers to help in controlling the onlookers as investigators collected evidence in the walkway between buildings where Griffin was shot.
Gary Housing Authority police, who were checking on the source of gunfire, heard men arguing about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. As they approached, a group of men scattered, then someone shot Griffin, who was not armed when police reached him.
Griffin, who lived in Delaney at 2236 Dunbar Court, served a prison term for dealing cocaine and was released in 2008. Police noted he had not added to his criminal record since then.
He was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. at the scene.
Detective Lorenzo Davis is investigating the homicide. He said Saturday morning he was pursuing leads and expected to speak to potential witnesses later Saturday. Anyone with information can call him at (219) 881-4738.
