CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police on Wednesday were searching for the person who shot a man in his car in the heart of Chinatown overnight.

The 38-year-old man was in his vehicle at 1:40 a.m. Wednesday in the 2200 block of South Wentworth Avenue when a man shot him, police said. He made it 11 blocks south to the area of 33rd Street and Wentworth Avenue near Armour Square Park before calling for help.

He was shot once in the chest and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition.

A bullet hole was visible in the passenger window of the man's car. There was an Uber sticker on the windshield, but it was not known late Wednesday if the man was a rideshare driver.

No one was in custody late Wednesday.

Meanwhile Wednesday, police issued a community alert about a pattern of gunpoint robberies in Chinatown—one of which happened around the time and location as the shooting.

Police said in each incident, two people get out of a car and demand a victim's property at gunpoint. They then take the victims' personal property such as money, cellphones, wallets, and purses.

In two incidents, victims or witnesses were physically harmed, police said.

In addition to the Wednesday morning incident at the same time as the shooting, there was also a robbery at 1:05 a.m. Monday in the 2300 block of South Wentworth Avenue, and at 1:20 a.m. Monday in the 2200 block of South Princeton Avenue, police said.

Police said the two robbers were men dressed all in black with ski masks, while a third person was driving the getaway car—described as a 2024 gray model.

Anyone with information on the shooting or the robberies should call Wentworth Area detectives at 312-747-8384.
