Man Shot During Domestic Dispute Charged With Beating Wife
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man accidentally shot in the South Shore neighborhood early Thursday while allegedly struggling with his wife over a gun has been charged with domestic battery.
Fredrick Payton, 43, was in an argument with his 57-year-old wife in the 7800 block of South Cregier Avenue about 12:55 a.m. when he allegedly began to hit her with his fists, police said. He then grabbed a gun and threatened to shoot her, police claim.
They began to struggle over the gun, and it discharged and hit the man in the ear, police said.
He was treated and released from John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, and then he was taken into police custody.
Payton was charged with one count of misdemeanor domestic battery causing bodily harm, according to a police News Affairs release. Payton will appear for a bond hearing Friday.
The woman suffered injuries during the struggle and was in "stable" condition at Jackson Park Hospital, police said.
Police said a handgun was recovered after the incident.
Area South detectives are investigating.
