Man Shot Dead By Police After Southeast Side Standoff

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A tense standoff with police early Wednesday left one man dead after police opened fire.
Police say the standoff in the 9500 block of South Avenue L on the city's Southeast Side began with a call for help.

Officers responded to a domestic violence call around 1:40 a.m., and inside, they found a man holding a knife to a small boy.
"Officers went into the residence and were able to have the younger child released by the offender that was holding him. He was holding him at knifepoint," said Chicago Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden.
But Camden says the man ignored repeated orders to put down the knife, and then charged at officers who had to open fire in response.
The man, identified as Karaka Walls, 24, of the Avenue L address, was fatally wounded, police said. The officers were not injured.
Camden said the officers had been called to the home several times for other domestic disturbances.
