Man Dies After Being Shot, Crashing Car Into Garage

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A male driver crashed into a garage on the South Side, after being fatally shot in the chest early Friday.
Police said 38-year-old Dionta West was getting into a 1991 Chevrolet Caprice outside his home in the 600 block of West 117th Street when a gunman approached and opened fire about 5:48 a.m.
West floored the gas to get away, but lost control of the car several blocks away, police said.
He crashed into a garage in the 11500 block of South Lowe Avenue, striking a van that was parked in front of the garage first, police said.
He was taken to Advocate Christ Medial Center in Oak Lawn where he later died from his injuries.
His fiance said he had just left for work shortly before the shooting.
"As he drove off, I just heard the gunshots and I hopped up. I called his phone and said 'Are you Okay?' and he said 'No. I have been shot twice I am laying in an alley,'" said Shanda Barnes.
Outside the home, a trail of glass from the shattered car windows. Not knowing what alley West was in, his brother drove around until he found him.
"He was still in the car. He said he couldn't feel his legs," said Eugene West, the victim's younger brother. "When I got the hospital he told me his stomach was hurting. he didn't make it out of surgery."
Barnes says West was a supervisor at Chicago International Charter School, and a good father who leaves behind three kids.
"Their dad was good to them, talked to them, played with them, He was one of those one of those fathers that took time out with them," said Barnes.
Loved ones say they have no idea why anyone would target West. They say they've been told there was an arrest in the case., but police aren't confirming that to CBS 2.
Police said the he did not appear to have ties to a gang.
